Hemerocallis "Hiperion"
Breeder:Franklin Mead, 1924
An historic hybrid that has lost none of its popularity even though it has been long surpassed in shape, style and color.
Award of Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society in 1931 *, this outstanding variety is the best known daylily of all time, beloved also for its beautiful scent .
Introduced in 1925 it has remained the standard to which other yellow daylilies have been compared, for decades.
Sidney Eddison in her book A passion for daylilies writes :
I have been unable to learn anything about Mr Mead, but in 'Hyperion' he has achieved at least a scrap of immortality. His flower is still a great favourite in gardens all over the States of America.
It is very vigorous and produces large numbers of 6'' canary yellow blooms on sturdy stems about 3 feet tall.
The plant blooms for several weeks in midsummer and each fragrant blossom stays open well into the evening.
