Hemerocallis 'Mary Todd'
Breeder:Orville Fay,1967
Named after the wife of President Lincoln, this daylily is the work of a visionary hybridizer: Orville Fay . He used his experience in breeding Iris to create the first proven tetraploid daylilies. Fay was one of the first breeders who employed colchicine, an alkaloid derived from the Autumn crocus to double the normal number of 22 chromosomes per cell, thus creating tetraployd daylilies . He laid the foundation for an entirely new breed of hybrids of Hemerocallis.
Fay's daylilies won an unprecedented four Silver Stout medals, among them the beautyful and prolific
