Strelitziaceae

So called from Qeen Charlotta Sophia , of the Meklemburg- Strelitz family, the wife of George III, King of the United Kingdom, a patron of Botany . This perennial, herb plant has very odd showy flowers and a beautiful banana-like foliage .
Besides the Strelitzia regina , the most common and easily found in all gardens in the Mediterranean Isles, we know five more species of this genre including the beautiful specimens S. augusta and S. nicolaii.
