Hippeastrum "Fire dance"

Amaryllidaceae

The genus hippeastrum has about seventyfive species which all come from South America .The name derives from the greek “hippeus”, knight and “astron”, star. The history of Hippeastrum in cultivation began with the introduction of some species into Europe in the seventeenth century. The first hybrid produced, reportedly between H. reginae and H. vittatum, was recorded in 1799 as having been grown at Preston, Lancashire, by an amateur gardener.
