Passifloraceae

Europeans came to know the passionflowers after the discovery of the New World and it was originally called by its indigenous name Mecoacan. . The genus Passiflora, belonging to the family Passifloraceae, includes more than 300 species which can be found in Central and South America, in Asia and Oceania.
It was introduced in Italy in 1553. As time went on, some missionaries noted many references to the passion of Christ in the parts of the plant that make up the flower for they introduced the name “flos passionis”.
